Pastor's Monthly Message
Pastor Julie Blum has been the pastor of Maple Leaf Lutheran Church since July of 2002.  She is originally from Kennewick, WA with most of her extended family still living in Eastern Washington.  She did her under graduate work at Pacific Lutheran University and received her Master’s of Divinity at Luther Seminary, in St. Paul Minnesota.  Before moving to Seattle she served as Associate Pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boise, Idaho.  Pastor Blum enjoys spending time with her daughter, gardening and traveling.  In 2013 she was privileged to receive a grant from the Lily Endowment Fund to take a three month sabbatical, traveling to Scotland, Ireland, Hawaii and the Oregon Coast.

There is a new presence on the internet.  They go by the name “Unvirtuous Abbey” and this is how they describe themselves: “Holier than thou, but not by much. Digital monks praying for people with first world problems. From our keyboard to God's ears. Since Aug. 4, 2010.”  They show up on twitter and facebook as well as other random places on the internet offering prayers and petitions.....

Christmas and New Years can be a painful time for some. It may be the first holiday season without a loved family member who has recently died; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. In response to this, there is a new type of worship service being offered by some churches this time of year....

At our November 13 Congregational meeting our Church President, Bruce Ritzen mentioned the program Natural Church Development.  He told you how our Assistant to the Bishop, Jan Nesse, recently came to explain the program to our Church Council.  We are still in the process of deciding if it’s a tool we would like to use but in the meantime I’d like to tell you a bit about it....
