Pastor's Desk

Pastor Julie Blum has been the pastor of Maple Leaf Lutheran Church since July of 2002.  She is originally from Kennewick, WA with most of her extended family still living in Eastern Washington.  She did her under graduate work at Pacific Lutheran University and received her Masterís of Divinity at Luther Seminary, in St. Paul Minnesota.  Before moving to Seattle she served as Associate Pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boise, Idaho.  Pastor Blum enjoys spending time with her daughter, gardening and traveling.  In 2013 she was privileged to receive a grant from the Lily Endowment Fund to take a three month sabbatical, traveling to Scotland, Ireland, Hawaii and the Oregon Coast.

Some of you may recall that my home congregation, where I was baptized, confirmed and ordained had to closed about ten years ago.  There were simply not enough members or money to operate a vital congregation.  That meant that after being members at one congregation for over 30 years, my parents became members of a new congregation....

By now I hope you have heard the exciting news:  On August 14 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America elected the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton as our first female presiding bishop. Eaton received 600 votes, while the incumbent Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson received 287.  Here is a bit of what the Huffington Post said about the news story....

Now that Iím back I can tell you that I had some trepidation about going on a 12 week sabbatical.  Everyone just has SO many expectations and preconceived notions of what a sabbatical should be: Some people think that it should be all about learning, reading, taking classes or somehow increasing ones knowledge. Others think it should be a great spiritual experience full of enlightenment and growth, touching the very heart of God.  Still others think that the pastor will come back super renewed and refreshed, full of brand new energy and ideas.  Others are simply jealous and bitter, thinking itís unfair that THEY donít get a sabbatical from their job...
